A small and mountainious village naming Namkeungmai village, Bokeo province is a place I was born. This place is in the north of Laos.
Namkeungmai is situated near the Mekong river, opposite of Chiangsaen district and Chiangrai province, Thailand.
The name of the village came from the river-Namkeung, Nam=water. In fact, there was a village called Namkeungkao which is situated on another of the river. Later, there were some group of people moving and resettled here called Namkeungmai. The word Kao means old and Mai means New. Therefore, Namkeungmai is a new village which situated after Namkeungkao.
While entering the village, there will be the houses being situated on both side of the road along the velley and Mekhong river.
As a matter of fact, this place before 1975, most population lived in were Miens (Yao). Most houses made of wood and bamboo. Most of population cultivated and raised animals. Transportantion was not good. Going to other villages were so difficult, especially rainy season.
After revolution in 1975, there were more and more people moved in. This included my family. These days, most of them are right now Leu, Thaineu, Thaidam, Lao, etc. The condition of livelihood is getting better and better. Besides cultivation, most people become traders.
